How To

How can you plan your first cruise?

A cruise planning process is similar to any other trip. There are many things you need to consider such as where to go and what activities to include, costing, and budgeting. There are some important differences to consider when planning your first cruise if you are new to cruising. For example, cruises typically last much longer than land vacations (up to 3 weeks), so you won't want to leave anything out! Here are some tips to help make this vacation even easier:

  1. Book at least six months prior to departure. This way, you can get great deals and avoid crowds. Also, you'll have plenty time to research your ship, itinerary, ports and activities. You might even find a deal on airfare too!
  2. Pick a destination. It doesn't really matter what port you choose, just choose one that appeals. There are many reasons people love to cruise to different destinations. Some people love exploring cities while others enjoy relaxing onboard. Whatever your preferences, you should remember which destination you would like to visit. A Caribbean island is a favorite choice. Alaska and Europe are close behind.
  3. Booking a suite is an option. Suites have more space, a private balcony and other amenities. These suites can usually be booked for $100-$300 per person, depending on their size and availability during your sailing date.
  4. Check the weather forecast - Cruising is often associated with warm tropical climates. But, make sure to check the weather forecasts on the days you'll visit the ports. You should be aware of the potential dangers from the ocean, especially in Antarctica and Alaska.
  5. Keep it light when packing for a cruise. You should only bring 10 items. This means that you don't need to pack a lot of clothes and shoes in your suitcase. Make sure to only bring what you really need. It is a good idea to bring layers of clothing because you might not be able access the laundry facilities at your destination.
  6. Read reviews before you purchase tickets. Make sure you understand the pricing policies, what services they provide, and whether their cancellation policy makes sense for you.
  7. Do not miss these must see spots. Visit each port at minimum once. Each area has its own charms and culture so you should take advantage of every opportunity.
